The European Union is has lost its global leading role after Britain decided to leave, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned in Warsaw after the meeting of the V4 leaders. He said the EU has been downgraded to a regional player in light of the worst possible response to the migration crisis by the European Commission.
He also added that the EU should clarify its position on migration and define objectives. Hungary’s position is clear: illegal migration should be halted by setting up refugee camps and asylum centres beyond Europe’s borders, Mr Orbán emphasised. Hungary refuses to give up sovereignty and control of its own borders, the PM emphasised. The EU proposals would “systematically eliminate” these, he added. The Warsaw summit laid the foundations for the V4 countries to come forward with a common European programme for the Bratislava EU summit scheduled for September, he said. The four premiers discussed how to represent, on a European scale, fundamental values such as national traditions, Christianity and security, which are matters of consensus among the V4 countries.
