With two late goals conceded, Hungary lost its final game in the International Ice Hockey Men’s World Championship against the German team, which uspet the US in its previous match.
Hungary claimed its first victory in ice hockey's elite division in 77 years after beating Belarus 5-2 in St. Petersburgh on Saturday. A victory on Monday would have secured Rick Chernomaz's team in a safe spot against relegation.
István Sofron opened the scoring for Hungary in the first period in the tenth minutes. Germany, which qualified to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2011, after stunning the USA, equalised in the 32nd minute.
Denis Reul gave Germany back the lead at 42, but Hungary was quick to equalise with Wehrs Kevin deflected shot three minutes later. Despite heroic defending in the last half of the third period, the German side overwhelmed Hungary and with Constantin Braun's shot they took the lead with only 2 minutes two play. Hungary took its chance for the equaliser pulling off the goalie, but that did pay off and the final score came to 4-2.
Hungary, which participates for the first time in seven years in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship can still avoid relegation if France beats Belarus on Tuesday.
