Hungarian dairy farmers took to the streets, marching with their cows on the street of Budapest to protest against the low purchase price of milk and tax frauds.

Farmers held a similar protest a month ago, but they voiced discontent that talks with the Agricultural Ministry officials did not yield results. The purchase price of milk has dropped to HUF 60-65 per litre, which is HUF 20 below the breakeven point. Farmers also voiced discontent that cheap imports and tax evasion due to high VAT, the highest in Europe with 27%, is driving them out of business. The government announced to lower the VAT on milk and egg to 5% from 2017, but the cuts will not be extended to UHT milk.
