“This is not democracy”

– How do you see the immigration measures of the new Italian government? Does the public support their decisions?
– The new PD – M5S government is never missing the opportunity to underline their intention to introduce a new measure designed to open our Italian boarders. This is the exact opposite of what the League party and Mr. Salvini has fought for and rightly obtained. In fact, over the last year, the number of immigrants arrived in Italy drastically fell of almost 80 percent. It goes without saying that a new open-gate measure will not reflect the public interest.
– Do you think that after Lega's successes in the regional elections, there's chance for early elections?
– There is now a great opportunity for the Lega, which is represented by the upcoming regional elections in Emilia Romagna. Moreover, we should always keep in mind that the Italian citizens are demanding national elections. In fact, the current situation faced by Italy is simply unbelievable. Lega is still the strongest party in the whole country. Nevertheless, decisions are taken by a national government which does not reflect the majority of its own citizens. This is not a democracy.
- David Sassoli, the European Parliament’s president has suspended your allowance for ten days, which means more than 1 million HUF, after you protested against the Turkish manoeuvres in Syria by throwing a box of chocolates on the floor in the plenary debate. Do you think the sanction was disproportionate?
– Indeed. As a member of the European Parliament, hence as a politician, I have the duty to represent the people who elected me. For this reason, my freedom of expression and of speech are pivotal in the context of the European Parliament. My action was merely intended to denounce the atrocities committed by Turkey, and it still amazes me how the President of the EP was outraged by a box of chocolate but not by all the civilians who lost their life in that barbarous conflict. There is a European Parliament penalizes its members, but does not punish those who fire missiles and throw bombs.
– Do you think that anti-immigration parties, mainly in your group, Identity and Democracy, but also the Polish and the Hungarian ruling parties are treated unfairly?
– It is not simply a matter of being treated unfairly. Political parties that are anti-immigration are often perceived in a negative way. On this regard, there is clear evidence of the European Parliament willingness to isolate the ID group, which is the so-called cordon sanitarie. However, our ultimate aim is to strive for better policies, and for these policies to be consecutively respected. The protection of our borders and of our citizens always represent our most important priority.
– What was your main point at this debate?
– I firmly believe that we have wasted too much time, attention and money on a country like Turkey. The European Union has allocated, from 2007 to 2020, over € 9 billion to Turkey. In light of the recent events, I think it is now crystal clear to everyone that all these funds went fully to waste.
