Unions agreed with state asset manager MNV on wage hikes at state-owned Volán bus company, hence the five-day strike from Easter Monday had been called off, Zoltán Baranyai, President of Public Transport Labour Union announced on Friday.

The 2,600 Volán employees, who earn less than HUF 190,000 per month will see their wages increased by 5% from January 1. Some 1,200 workers, who earn more than that, will  receive a 3.36% increase.  The wage hikes will be implemented retroactively.  Fringe benefits will also be raised. Overall, 85% of Volán employees will receive higher wages.

Last week, after wage talks with management collapsed, Volán employees announced a five-day strike, which would have effected a quarter of bus lines in the countryside.
