Easter is an important part of the shopping circle as people spend HUF 40-50 billion more during that time to buy the most essential components to the feast celebrating meals.
Some 50-60 billion eggs, 1000 tons of sweets are sold before Easter, according to projections. Hungarians spend on average HUF 8-9 billion on ham each year. Retail-chain Auchan sold 700 tons of ham last year, 20% of the full-year figure for 2015. The sale of spirits rise 20-30% on average at this time of year.
The state news agency's pre-Easter survey shows that retailers were upbeat about their potential turnover. The Central Statistics Office will release the preliminary reading on the retail sales figure for March on May 4th.
