The repayment of the IMF-EU loan is an unprecedented achievement in today's world economic environment, which could not have been made possible without friends such as the OECD, Prime Minster Viktor Orbán said in Paris after an OECD council meeting.
"Tonight every Hungarian family has a good reason to open a bottle of good red wine and say cheers to the country, because on Wednesday, we managed to settle an old debt that prevoius governments have brought upon us, when they took out huge loans in 2008 to avoid insolvency", Mr. Orbán said. Now that we have paid that loan back in full, we breath easier, we awoke to a better morning, he said.
OECD secretary-general Ángel Gurría has called Hungary's acheivements a success story and recalled the 20-year long co-operation between Hungary and the OECD. This is just the beginning of joint work, said Gurria, who will visit Budapest soon.
