Hungarian PM Viktor Orban will not vote against Donald Tusk, and expects big debates about migration in Brussels.
Donald Tusk is going to be the European Council's president, the only common candidate of the European People's Party (EPP), Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told journalists before the summit of the European Council. Mr. Orban stressed that as both of the Hungarian governing parties – Fidesz and KNDP – are members of the EPP, Hungary will support their candidate and leave the debates to Poland.
According to the Prime Minister from a Hungarian perspective the biggest debate will be about asylum and migration policies, because Hungary accepted a law which aims to separate real refugees from migrants already outside the territory of the EU. He emphasised that the Hungarian law must be protected and Hungary has to prove that the Hungarian laws are not against EU law.
Mr. Orban added that it's not easy for Central Europeans to be ”good Europeans”, because the region has a different heritage and instinct regarding several questions, including traditions. These differences explain the different attitude towards migration, but the Central European approach is starting to be more accepted, he added. Mr. Orban stressed that Western countries used to resist advice coming from Eastern Europe, but ”we are getting closer to reality”.
