Hungary’s population declined by 40,000 last year, compared to 34,800, the Central Statistical Office announced.
The number of births rose slightly,0.2% to 91,700 in 2015, whereas the the number of deaths increased 4.2% to 131,600. The death rate was significantly higher in the January-February period, which is explained by the epidemic flue. More people died in the summer of 2015 than in the preceding year caused by the heat waves.
Hungary's population has been on the decline since the mid 1980's. Based on data from the 2011 census adjusted with births statistics and immigration, Hungary's population now stands at 9.82 million.
