The government and the city council agrees on withdrawing the Olympic bid.
The Hungarian government decided to advise the city of Budapest and the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) to withdraw its bid to host the 2024 summer Olympics, the head of the Prime Minister's Press Office, Bertalan Havasi informed Hungarian news agency MTI. The announcement came after Prime Minister Viktor Orban consulted the mayor of Budapest, Istvan Tarlos and Zsolt Borkai, the had of MOB. Fidesz group leader Lajos Kósa told MTI that according to the governing party the opposition ”lied to everyone about the Olympics on several occasions”, because first they supported the idea but then used the opportunity to attack the bid.
Last week the Momentum movement and left-wing opposition parties submitted 226.000 signatures on a petition for a referendum on the subject.
