Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament László Kövér has called on the European Union not to threaten Hungary with the withdrawal of structural funds in retaliation for its opposition to receiving illegal migrants.

Hungary continues to firmly reject the plan for the distribution of migrants under mandatory quotas and has challenged the related decision through legal channels, speaker of the Parliament, László Kövér told the Slovenian RTV4 channel on Thursday. ”We are not a servant's room of the European Union. We should not be threatened with the withdrawal or reduction of structural funds. They are not grants or alms but compensation for obligations assumed by us upon our EU entry,” he said.

The speaker said that implementing the mandatory migrant quota would be tantamount to ”cultural suicide” as well as causing an economic and social crisis.
