Thousands of teachers in several Hungarian cities protested on Wednesday. The government says they are open for discussion but the opposition is using the demonstrations for political purposes.
While governing Fidesz-KNDP cares about the children, the ”failed left side” wants to use the teachers for their own political purposes, MP of KNDP, István Hollik said on Wednesday. The politician asked the opposition not to disturb the dialogue between the government and the teachers. Mr Hollik also highlighted the obvious involvement of former and current opposition politicians in the protests.
The government called the trade unions, the parents, the students and the employers for a roundtable discussion on next Tuesday. State Secretary Bence Rétvári emphasised the government is open to solving the problems of the teachers and this roundtable will be the widest possible consultation. Rétvári said they want to discuss the ”questions raised with good intention”. Regarding the teachers' protests the state secretary emphasised that in Hungary all have the right to peacefully voice their opinion.
Meanwhile in Slovakia the teachers' strike has practically ended as by Wednesday only 0,7 percent of the schools remained closed.
