The well-known geopolitics and security policy expert, Gyorgy Nogradi had a short talk with Magyar Hirlap on the future physical barrier between Hungary and Serbia.

nógrádiWhat do you think about the government's announcement on the 4 meter high barrier on the Hungarian-Serbian border?

As for Hungary, it is something that needs to be done. No question about that. Hungary received more than 60000 illegal immigrants in the first half of the year. In the meantime, Austria announced that they suspending deciding on applications. Germany might revoke its membership in the Schengen Agreement. Plus, Hungary can't deal with the migration flood.

Do we violate any kinds of international agreements by building the barrier?

No. It's important to know that other counties have built barriers, too, for example in Northern Africa. Or take Germany as an example. They built a fence around G7 summit.

Could it cause any tensions between Hungary and Serbia?

No. According to the government's decision, Hungary will consult with Serbia, their ministers will get continuous, up-to-date information. Moreover, Serbia has already announced that they would like to build a similar barrier on the Serbian-Macedonian border.

Is it possible that the barrier may have any negative effects on the Hungarians living in Serbia?

My answer would be the same. No. We are talking about refugees who can't be controlled by Serbia.
